7 DEADLY SINS OF RECRUITING

If you have ever been involved in MLM or network marketing, then you know how important it is to recruit.

You can sell many products, but the real passive income comes from building a team of people under you.

Your company may tell you that all you have to do is talk to people and they join.

As you quickly found out, that is not true.

You may have had little or no success recruiting.

What are you doing wrong?

If you are committing these seven deadly sins of recruiting, you may be sabotaging your own business.

DEADLY SIN #1 – EGO

Ego is at the top of our list for the seven deadly sins of recruiting. Also known as pride or self-righteousness, ego is simply the belief that you know everything and everything you do is correct.

News flash: Ego will kill your business faster than anything else on this list.

If you have developed your own method of recruiting and you have marginal success with it, you may think that makes you a master recruiter.

You may be wrong.

7 deadly sins of recruiting - ego

It’s not about you.

What To Do Instead:

Take a good, hard honest look at yourself and your business. Look at your results. Compare the time you spend recruiting vs. the actual number of sign ups you get.

Next, learn a new method of marketing yourself. Read widely and listen to very successful leaders in your industry.

Ego can fool you into thinking that only people in your company matter. You probably have some excellent leadership to look up to in your MLM, but don’t make a fatal mistake in thinking that they’re the only ones who can give you advice.

Look outside of your industry. Look for consistencies in success stories and start applying them.

Lifehack offers some great advice that if followed closely, can propel your business into success.

Egos want to surround themselves with people who will obey, sit at their feet, and love them unconditionally. Fortunately, people can never be pets. If you want to stop treating people like pets, learn to be a giver. Also, learn how to appreciate people’s shortcomings and mistakes. You need to learn how to use experiences as life lessons that will enable you to become a better person.

Always remember to keep learning, even if you feel you have mastered recruiting. Being humble resonates with your team.

No one likes a know-it-all.

DEADLY SIN #2 – ABUSING SOCIAL MEDIA

You might already be using social media. If so, have you gotten messages like this?

Hi (insert wrong name here)! I noticed that we have a lot of friends in common. I like to connect with like-minded people and I think we would be a good fit.

Then you friend them and they say:

Have you heard of XYZ MLM? They are the LATEST in (something that a million other people are promoting).

Trust me, after thousands of messages that are similar to these, you get tired of them pretty quick.

Is that you? Are you chasing after people? Are you trying “clever” gimmicks to get people to connect with you and then spam the crap out of them?

If someone offers no value yet expects everyone to recognize how great their business is and join on the spot, do you think they would make it very far?

That, my friend, is abusing social media.

Here is a tip. People are invested in their own interests. While your company may have done great things, no one really cares unless you can show how it benefits them. Always keep this in mind.

It is always about them, never about you.

What To Do Instead:

Meet Wellington Campos. He is a social business strategist, “with 12 years experience developing and implementing digital marketing strategies.

He is one of the most popular marketers on Instagram with over 2 million followers.

Why?

He uses a Woody doll (the character from Toy Story) and puts it in selfie-style poses.

Talk about interesting!

That’s great Darren, what does that have to do with recruiting on social media?

Everything.

Social media is where people go to connect with each other. Your job is to foster relationships with people. You need to get their attention first by using something they can relate to.

Campos is demonstrating his expertise in social media by creating a mass following doing something that no one else is doing. This is VERY attractive to people looking to create a social media following.

If he spammed his business, no one would give a crap.

See the difference in strategies?

DEADLY SIN #3 – SPAMMING

Spamming is the act of sending out unsolicited messages over and over again.

Spam is:

  • Cutting, pasting and posting the exact same message.
  • More than just annoying people with messages that they don’t want; it makes you look bad.
  • So widespread that even legitimate messages can be deleted because they were thought to be spam.
  • Advertising your business in somebody’s comments section without their permission.
  • Posting advertisements in groups without permission.
  • Even putting advertisements on your personal social media wall over and over again.

7 deadly sins of recruiting - spam

This is what spam looks like in real life.

If you are using this method of advertising, you need to stop now.

Spamming is not only annoying but it’s the fastest way to ruin your brand.

What To Do Instead:

Don’t spam.

DEADLY SIN #4 – NO EMAIL LIST

Email lists are one of the most effective ways to communicate with your audience. Setting up a form for people to opt in to your list means that you can gather new leads 24 hours a day.

Unfortunately, many people are trying to build teams in MLM without email lists.

Why?

  • It may never occurred to them to have a email list.
  • They have a collection of emails that they send messages to in bulk, but they have not yet learned about autoresponders or social media management programs.
  • They may not understand how to set up a professional email list.

In any case, email is still a way for many people to get information from you and your business.

What To Do Instead:

Use an autoresponder. This is software that collects emails for you and sends messages out either by broadcast or drip marketing.

What does this mean?

  1. Broadcast – send email to everyone on your list at the same time.
  2. Email drip – write several email at once, then every time someone joins your list, they start receiving one email at a time.

It may seem complicated, but setting up an email campaign and an autoresponder is easier than you think.

Remember to send value-based email. Do not start advertising your business. Do not send several email a day. This is spam and can get your account shut down.

Aweber is the leading autoresponder on the market. There are other options, both free and paid.

DEADLY SIN #5 – NOT BLOGGING

Blogging is one of the most valuable tools that you can use for your business. If you aren’t using one, you could be leaving a lot of money on the table.

Business owners don’t blog for variety of reasons.

  • They think they can’t write.
  • They think that they have nothing to say.
  • They think blogs are a waste of time.
  • They don’t really understand how a blog works.
  • They don’t know how a blog can earn them extra income.
  • They started to blog, it was unsuccessful, so they never tried again.

It’s true, not all businesses should blog. However, a vast majority of businesses can benefit from blogging.

If you are trying to recruit, it’s time to reconsider this deadly sin of not blogging.

What To Do Instead:

Blogging can take a lot of time and effort. However, if you want to have a way to inexpensively recruit people into your business, you will want to consider taking the necessary steps to start a blog.

First of all, you will want to have a paid blog with your own domain name. This is to help you brand yourself. Free blogs are nice, but they can have a lot of restrictions. If you’re not careful your free blogging account can get shut down with no recourse.

Next decide what kind of content you want on your blog.

It should be:

  1. Inspiring, educational or entertaining. Or any combination.
  2. Related to your industry (health, finance, etc.).
  3. Consistent. Blog daily or weekly. Monthly is not recommended. Even bi-weekly is a good start.
  4. ALWAYS focused on your audience, even your “About Page.

When you blog you will want to make sure that every piece of content that you put out, whether it’s an article, a video, a podcast, or simply a photo collage with captions, will benefit your reader.

I use a blogging system that helps me blog easily. It is called Kalatu.

  • It is on an authority domain, so it easily generates traffic from Google.
  • It has a large community where you can do blog comment exchanges.
  • Training to help make the most of the blog.
  • Built-in monetization system.
  • Writing prompts, such as topic ideas, headlines and contests.

This goes hand-in-hand with attraction marketing.

DEADLY SIN #6 – NOT USING ATTRACTION MARKETING

Attraction marketing is the fine art of putting out valuable content that resonates with the reader. You are showing your expertise in something that is related to your business. It also can entertain, enlighten, or inspire.

If you are not doing attraction marketing then you are probably doing the opposite -advertising, cold calling or spamming.

If you are cold calling or even going door-to-door, you may be investing a lot of time with very little return.

What To Do Instead:

Use a blog or social media channel to start creating messages that resonate with leads. For example, if you sell healthcare products and you’re trying to recruit people into your healthcare MLM, then share very useful health-related information.

The art of attraction marketing is to create emotions in people that drive them to act. It is not about forcing people to buy your product. It is about giving them information or tapping into an existing emotion and showing them that you have a solution or you have what they are looking for.

Nowadays people are getting bombarded with advertising, banner ads, spam, telemarketers, etc.  They tune it out.

However, people love to share inspiring stories. They also love hacks and they will share them willingly.

Attraction marketing might not happen overnight for you. In fact, it can take months for attraction marketing to really get going. But you could spend those months hunting down people to get them into your business, or you can build marketing channels that can continue to work for you even after you call it quits for the day.

Content marketing is a form of attraction marketing. This infographic shows you in detail how to use content marketing and why.

DEADLY SIN #7 – FOCUSING ON THE WRONG GOALS

When people get started in MLM, many times it’s the promise of making lots of money that attracts them. However, if you want to be a leader in the industry, you need to focus on the people you’re trying to bring in, NOT the money.

Doesn’t make sense?

I’m not saying that you should not try to make money. What I am saying is that we must focus on being valuable to people. When people see value, they want to pay for it. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

If you focus on taking money from people, then you are going to have a very hard time recruiting people into your business.

Why?

Remember what I said earlier; people are interested in what benefits them. If you try to get people to sign up, without them knowing you or what you offer, you will turn them off.

What To Do Instead

  1. Let go of your ego.
  2. Stop spamming
  3. Don’t abuse social media.
  4. Learn to build an email list.
  5. Use attraction marketing.
  6. Blog.
  7. Focus on providing more value, branding yourself and becoming a great leader.

If more people did this, more people could recruit and in turn teach them how to become leaders who can also recruit.
